SETI League Technical Symposium
and Annual Membership Meeting

Saturday and Sunday, 28 - 29 April 2001, Trenton NJ

Symposium Announcement:

The SETI League, Inc., nonprofit leaders in the privatized Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, will be holding its first Technical Symposium the weekend of April 28 - 29, 2001, in Trenton NJ. SETI League members from around the world will present papers on radio astronomy, microwave communications, and the hardware, software, and search strategies being used to seek scientific evidence of other intelligent civilizations in the cosmos. The Symposium is being hosted by the Engineering Department of The College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College). In attendance will be a respectable sampling of the SETI League's 1200 members from 60 countries, including many of the over 100 SETI League members building and operating their own observing stations.

Proceedings:

A Call for Papers was published in the Winter 2001 issue of SearchLites. The deadline for submission of abstracts has now passed. A formal Proceedings will be published by the American Radio Relay League. All registered Symposium attendees will receive one copy of the Proceedings. Additional copies will be available at the Symposium. Accepted authors are reminded that camera-ready copy must be received at SETI League headquarters not later than 1 March 2001. Instructions for preparation of final manuscripts may be found in The SETI League Policy Manual.

Registration and Fees:

Advance registration fees for the Technical Symposium have been set at $30 US for SETI League members, and $80 US for non-members, if received before 15 April 2001. After that date, attendees may register at the door, at $40 US for members, and $90 US for non-members. One copy of the Proceedings is included in the registration fee. Additional Proceedings copies may be ordered in advance, or purchased at the door, for $20 US. An online Registration Form is posted to The SETI League website, at <http://www.setileague.org/admin/register.htm>. The deadline for online registration is 15 April 2001. Registration forms were also sent to all SETI League members in good standing, on 1 February 2001.

Awards Banquet:

An Awards Banquet is scheduled for Saturday night, with banquet tickets available only in advance, at $30 US. The Banquet, to be held in the Campus Center at The College of New Jersey, will include a guest speaker and door prizes. It will culminate in the presentation of the sixth Giordano Bruno Memorial Award, The SETI League's highest honor, to an individual who has made significant contributions to the art and science of SETI. Banquet tickets may be ordered when pre-registering for the Conference, at $30 US per person. Dress code is conference casual. As banquet seating is limited, it is unlikely that additional banquet tickets will be available at the door.

Conference Venue:

The Technical Symposium sessions, Annual Membership Meeting and Board of Trustees Meeting will all be held in the Department of Engineering, Armstrong Hall, Room 136, College of New Jersey, 2000 Pennington Road, Ewing NJ 08628 USA. (Armstrong Hall is directly across from the college's Main Entrance from Route 31.) There will be a Friday evening Hospitality Suite, and possibly other Symposium social functions, held at the official Conference Hotel (see below). The following links may prove useful:

Parking:

Parking on campus is available in the lot and Armstrong Parking Garage, directly behind Armstrong Hall. Addition parking is available across the circular drive. All gates will be up in these parking areas, on both Saturday and Sunday.

Lodging:

The official Conference Hotel is the Hampton Inn and Suites Newtown, 1000 Stoney Hill Road, Yardley PA 19067. (Yardley is directly across the Delaware River from Trenton NJ.) Phone: (215) 860- 1700. Fax: (215) 860-1771. It is anticipated that various Symposium social functions may also be held at the Hampton Inn. A block of rooms (non-smoking, standard double) is being held for Symposium attendees for both Friday and Saturday nights, at a rate of $99 per night plus 8% tax. Reservations must be made not later than 1 April 2001, directly with the hotel. Be sure to mention "SETI Conference" to secure the quoted room rate.

Carpooling between the hotel and campus is encouraged. A sign-in board will be provided in the Hampton Inn lobby, for coordination between those offering and those needing rides.

Annual Meeting:

In accordance with Article IV, Section 1 of our duly approved Bylaws, as amended, the Trustees of The SETI League, Inc. hereby schedule our seventh Annual Membership Meeting, to be held in conjunction with the Technical Symposium, on Sunday, 29 April 2001 beginning at 10 AM. SETI League members in good standing, their guests, interested radio amateurs, amateur and professional astronomers, and members of the press are cordially invited to attend the Annual Meeting, whether registered for the Symposium or not.

Per Article IV, Section 3 our Bylaws, as amended, written notice of this Meeting is being mailed to all members in good standing, not less than ten days nor more than ninety days prior to the meeting date. Members are encouraged to submit additional Old Business and New Business items for inclusion in the Agenda. Please email your agenda items to n6tx @ setileague.org, not later than March 1, 2001.

Quorum and Agenda:

As attendance by one percent of the League's membership constitutes a quorum, all members in good standing are encouraged to attend the Annual Meeting. The preliminary agenda for this meeting, per Bylaws Article XII, appears below.

Board Meeting:

The annual Board of Trustees Meeting required per Bylaws Article V, Section 3 will immediately follow the Membership Meeting. All SETI League members in good standing are welcome to attend.
