During SETICon weekend, eight members participated in an optional Microwave Hardware Workshop. Here Dr. Malcolm Raff, WA2UNP, tests the bias on a low-noise preamplifier he has just finished constructing. Mal's amplifier yielded an impressive 0.6 dB noise figure and 17.47 dB of gain from 1 to 1.5 GHz.

Database committee chairman Harry Kimball provided SETICon03 participants with an introduction to digital signal processing techniques. See his presentation abstract.

Prof. Rob Lodder's first SETICon03 presentation, "A Parallel Processing Algorithm for Signal Detection," was an ideal follow-up to Harry Kimball's talk. See Rob's abstract.

Dr. Greg Matloff and his wife, artist C Bangs, describe holographic message plaques they have designed for future space missions. See their abstract for details.

Prof. Robert Wilkinson uses statistical analysis to explore the correlation between terrestrial objects (such as the pyramids at Giza) and groups of stars (including the Alpha Centauri system). Download his abstract.

In his second SETICon03 presentation, "Simulations, Small Sample Correlations and Probability," Prof. Rob Lodder points out some of the difficulties encountered in such statistical analyses as the one reported by Wilkinson. See Rob's second abstract.

Formal SETICon03 presentations concluded with a lively panel discussion on fresh SETI strategies, moderated by outgoing Strategic Planning Committee chairman Allen Tough (in the light blue sweater).

Drs Malcolm Raff (second from left) and H. Paul Shuch (right) present the main SETICon03 banquet prizes to lucky winners David Ocame (left) and Dr. Bruce Cornet. Dave's First Prize is the demonstration low-noise preamplifier built by Ed Cole during our Microwave Hardware Workshop. Bruce is lucky winner of our Grand Prize, a 1420 MHz helical antenna feed donated by Dr. David Clingerman, CEO of Olde Antenna Labs of Denver. Both winners are working on putting Project Argus stations on the air.
