The SETI League is saddened to announce the death in June of our dear friend Allen Katz, K2UYH. A pioneer in EME (moonbounce) microwave communications, Al spent 54 years as an electrical engineering professor at the College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College). He and his 18 foot Kennedy parabolic dish antenna participated in The SETI League's Project Argus all-sky survey from its inception. A close personal friend and colleague to our Executive Director, Al served for two decades as Chairman of our EME committee. His obituary may be found here.

Though never intended as a research facility, the SETI League's Very Small Array served as a proof of concept for future radio telescopes, pushing the state of the art and earning The SETI League US Patent #6,593,876, "Adaptive Microwave Antenna Array," for circuitry allowing an array of dishes to perform simultaneous radiometry, spectroscopy, and interferometry. But by 2024 it had reached the end of its useful life, and its masts, feedhorns, feed tripods, mounts, junction boxes, and cables were hauled off to the scrapyard, marking the end of an era.
