SETI League Membership Categories and Terms

  1. It shall be the policy of The SETI League, Inc. to solicit as members individuals of kindred aims and purposes with a view to forming a homogeneous organization for unity of action in matters affecting amateur participation in a global search for extraterrestrial intelligence. This policy shall embrace ten (10) categories of membership as follows:

    Supporting Members
    Additional Household Members
    Scholarship Members
    Household Life Members
    Life Members
    Sustaining Life Members
    Patron Members
    Director Members
    Benefactor Members
  2. Any individual who suitably expresses sympathy with and allegiance to the views of the Vision Statement and Mission Statement of The SETI League, Inc. in accordance with these Rules and Regulations is eligible for membership, in any of the above categories.

  3. Any corporation or commercial entity which suitably expresses sympathy with and allegiance to the views of the Vision Statement and Mission Statement of The SETI League, Inc. in accordance with these Rules and Regulations is eligible for membership, in the categories of Sustaining Life, Patron, Director or Benefactor member.

  4. Applications for membership shall be submitted to the Executive Director, along with payment of dues as established below. A suitable certificate shall be issued to all members in recognition of their affiliation.

  5. Except for Life, Household Life, Patron, Director and Benefactor Memberships, all Memberships shall be issued on a calendar-year basis, with dues prorated as detailed below. Expiration dates will be clearly indicated on Membership Certificates, and on mailing labels of periodic member correspondence sent by The SETI League, Inc.

  6. Life, Patron, Director and Benefactor Memberships shall be valid for the life of the individual or commercial entity, or that of The SETI League, Inc., whichever expires first.

  7. Additional Household Memberships shall be made available to individuals sharing a domicile with a Full or higher category member in good standing, and shall be renewable only throughout the duration of the associated membership.

  8. Household Life Memberships shall be made available to individuals sharing a domicile with a Life member in good standing, and shall be valid for the duration of the associated life membership.

  9. Supporting Memberships shall be made available to the elderly, the retired, the disabled, or to any person desiring to support and affiliate with The SETI League, Inc., whose personal circumstances preclude payment of Full Membership dues.

  10. Scholarship Memberships shall be made available to full-time students only. Applicants for Scholarship Membership must inform The SETI League, Inc. of their educational institution and anticipated date of graduation.

  11. The Sustaining Life Membership category is established to accommodate those generous few of our Life Members who have expressed a commitment to making a purely voluntary annual pledge of further financial support to The SETI League, Inc. Any Life Member may, at his or her sole discretion, upgrade to Sustaining Life Member status at such time as his or her financial circumstances may dictate. Sustaining Life Members will receive (if they wish it) public acknowledgment from The SETI League, and are invited to be our honored guests at our annual Awards Banquet.

  12. Except for Additional Household Members and Household Life Members, all members shall receive all issues of SearchLites, the quarterly newsletter of The SETI League, Inc., which are published during the term of said membership.

  13. Additional Membership Benefits associated with each category of membership may be established as necessary from time to time by the Board of Trustees of The SETI League, Inc., by separate resolution.

  14. Full Membership is designated as the basic SETI League membership category, with Full Membership dues established and adjusted as necessary from time to time by resolution of the Board of Trustees of The SETI League, Inc. Effective 1 January 1996, Full Membership dues are established at $50 US per year. Dues for the various other membership categories are established by applying to the prevailing Full Membership dues a specified Multiplier, as follows:

  15. * All Annual Memberships are issued for the calendar year. New memberships processed in January through April will be at full dues, and will expire at the end of the year. For those processed in May through August, members should remit half the indicated dues, for expiration at the end of the year. New members joining in September through December will pay the normal dues indicated above, with their memberships expiring at the end of the following year.

  16. All dues payments shall be in U.S. Dollars only. Any foreign checks submitted must be drawn on a U.S. Correspondent Bank. Dues payments may also be posted to a valid approved credit card (currently Visa and MasterCard).

  17. The Trustees of The SETI League, Inc. may, at their sole discretion, accept Donations in Kind, in lieu of membership dues contributions.

  18. The membership of any individual may be terminated and his or her membership certificate recalled by the Board of Trustees at any time for any cause deemed prejudicial to the best interests of The SETI League, Inc. Upon such termination, dues paid for any unexpired term of said membership will be promptly refunded to the former member.

  19. The SETI League, Inc. is a membership-supported, nonprofit [501(c)(3)], educational and scientific corporation. Membership in The SETI League, Inc. shall in no way be construed as conferring non-profit status upon any group or individual. Members may solicit and collect tax-exempt contributions in the name of The SETI League, Inc., only to the extent that all such funds collected are provided directly to and for the exclusive use of The SETI League, Inc. Individual dues payments and contributions to The SETI League, Inc. may be tax-exempt to the extent allowed by law.

  20. Members of The SETI League, Inc. may display a facsimile of the official Seal of The SETI League, Inc. in their personal correspondence, and in electronic media such as (but not limited to) World Wide Web personal Home Pages. Members will notify The SETI League, Inc. of any such electronic reproduction or distribution which they make of said Seal.

  21. These Rules and Regulations shall have the force and effect of Bylaws of The SETI League, Inc. They may be amended as necessary from time to time by the Board of Trustees. Amendments or revisions shall become effective as of the date of their posting to the World Wide Web site of The SETI League, Inc.
