LITTLE FERRY, NJ.., February, 1999 -- For the third time in four years, H. Paul Shuch, the noted author, educator and scientist popularly known as "Dr. SETI," will be lecturing in the UK about the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence. Dr. Shuch will be a featured speaker at the Radio Society of Great Britain's national VHF Convention on Sunday, 21 February 1999, at the Sandown Exhibition Centre, Esher, Surrey.
"Although The SETI League is an international grass-roots venture with members in 48 countries on six continents," reports Shuch, "the UK is unique as a hotbed of SETI activity and support. We enjoy a most active membership base in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, and Wales. Our first operational European observing station was in the UK. The volunteer chair of our membership services committee is British. My own first international conference presentation on SETI happened to take place in Scotland. And the very first interesting radio signal detected by our Project Argus survey of space was received by two English amateurs. British radio astronomers and laymen alike have embraced the search for life in space, as nowhere else in the world."
Dr. Shuch will be available for press interviews on Saturday, 20 February 1999. Details on the RSGB conference may be obtained from Marcia Brimson, by email to marcia.brimson @ rsgb.org.uk, by telephone at 01707 695015, or from the RSGB website. Further information about UK SETI activity can be obtained from SETI League volunteer regional coordinator Jenny Bailey, email jennyb @ jsquared.co.uk.
SETI scientists seek to determine through microwave and optical measurements whether humankind is alone in the universe. Since Congress terminated NASA's SETI funding in 1993, The SETI League and other scientific groups have been attempting to privatize the research. Experimenters interested in participating in the search for intelligent alien life, or citizens wishing to help support it, should email to join_at_setileague_dot_org, check the SETI League Web site at http://www.setileague.org/, send a fax to +1 (201) 641-1771, or contact The SETI League, Inc. membership hotline at +1 (800) TAU-SETI. Be sure to provide us with a postal address to which we will mail further information. The SETI League, Inc. is a membership-supported, non-profit [501(c)(3)], educational and scientific corporation dedicated to the electromagnetic Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence.
