Little Ferry, NJ.., November 2001 - The SETI League, Inc. is pleased to announce the publication of a new book on CD-ROM by Dr. H. Paul Shuch, its Executive Director and a respected radio amateur (N6TX) long involved in the microwave search for life in space.
Tune In The Universe! is a radio amateur's guide to the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). It is an interactive book on CD-ROM, which can be read on any computer with ordinary web-browser software (easy-to-use hypertext format). Its six sections are part history, part tutorial, and part memoir, with a mix of photos and songs to entertain as well as educate. It seeks to involve radio amateurs, amateur astronomers, and other hobbyists in a scientifically credible search for our cosmic companions.
Science fiction luminary and SETI proponent Sir Arthur C. Clarke adds, "I congratulate Dr. Shuch on his lucid, comprehensive, and often very amusing account of the radio search for ETs. Perhaps, as some wit remarked, the best proof that there is Intelligent Life in Outer Space is the fact it hasn't come here. Well, it can't hide forever - one day we will overhear it."
Tune In The Universe! (ISBN 0-87259-854-3), copyright © 2001, is published by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national association for Amateur Radio. Dr. Shuch will donate a portion of each sale to benefit the nonprofit SETI League, Inc. Cover price is $24.95 US, through the ARRL, The SETI League, Inc., and quality book vendors everywhere. Copies will be available before the first of January, 2002. Order from ARRL online <http://www.arrl.org/catalog/?item=8543>, or telephone toll free US 1-888-277-5289, or elsewhere +1 (860) 594-0355, fax +1 (860) 594-0303.
SETI scientists seek to determine through microwave and optical measurements whether humankind is alone in the universe. Since Congress terminated NASA's SETI funding in 1993, The SETI League and other scientific groups have been attempting to privatize the research. Experimenters interested in participating in the search for intelligent alien life, or citizens wishing to help support it, should email to join_at_setileague_dot_org, check the SETI League Web site at http://www.setileague.org/, send a fax to +1 (201) 641-1771, or contact The SETI League, Inc. membership hotline at +1 (800) TAU-SETI. Be sure to provide us with a postal address to which we will mail further information. The SETI League, Inc. is a membership-supported, non-profit [501(c)(3)], educational and scientific corporation dedicated to the electromagnetic Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence.
