During the International Academy of Astronautics SETI Committee meeting in Washington DC on October 23, 2019, chairman Claudio Maccone elevated SETI League executive director emeritus H. Paul Shuch to Emeritus membership in that Committee. Paul had served as an IAA SETI Committee member, vice-chair, and webmaster for nearly two decades.

The SETI League remembers cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, who died this week at age 85. Leonov performed the very first Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA, or "spacewalk") in 1965, and participated with American astronauts in the landmark Apollo-Soyuz Test Project a decade later.

On June 7, 2019, SETI League member David Ocame, WS1ETI, gave a SETI presentation to the St. Petersburg (FL) Radio Club. "I thought it went well," reports Dave. "The audience of about 30 people voiced their interest and asked a lot of good questions. It even generated 2 requests to present to other groups in the area."

The SETI League is saddened to report the death on Monday of Owen Garriott, W5LFL, at age 88. Owen was an electrical engineering professor at Stanford, a Skylab and Space Shuttle astronaut, and a lifelong radio amateur. In December 1983, he became the first ham to operate in space. In this early 1984 picture, Owen is exchanging QSL cards with H. Paul Shuch (now SETI League Executive Director Emeritus), following Owen's historic STS-9 mission.

Last fall, a group of astrophysics students from Lycoming College in Williamsport PA paid a visit to H. Paul Shuch's Project Argus station FN11lh. In addition to being SETI League executive director emeritus, Dr. Shuch is a retired Lycoming Professor of Physics.

Paul Shuch into membership in Sigma Pi Sigma, the physics honor society. Dr. Shuch is a retired Lycoming Professor of Physics. Shuch asked, "if this is an induction ceremony, where's the big coil?"
