Recipients

The 2013 Orville Greene Service Award, announced at the 2013 SETI League annual meeting, was awarded to Dr. Alexander L. Zaitsev, our volunteer Regional Coordinator for Russia. As Chief scientist of the Institute of Radio Engineering, Russian Academy of Sciences, he has been a tireless proponent of "Messaging to ETI" or METI. Zaitsev has written numerous editorials as well as technical papers on the subject, and has been active on the various SETI League email discussion lists. He has also been very much involved in conducting transmissions into space from the Evpatoria planetary radar facility in Ukraine. Details appear in this press release. 2013

Larry Spector, W2QOV, is the 2012 recipient of the annual Orville Greene Service Award for outstanding (though, in this case, unwitting) contributions to The SETI League, Inc. The presentation was made in San Jose, CA by executive director emeritus H. Paul Shuch. Spector's claim to fame? A quarter century ago, he introduced two of his ham radio friends to each other. Shuch, N6TX, and Richard Factor, WA2IKL, went on to start The SETI League. Further details appear in this Press Release.

The 2011 Orville Greene Service Award, announced at the 2011 SETI League annual meeting, was awarded posthumously to Dr. Malcolm Raff, WA2UNP, for his fifteen years of leadership on the SETI League technical advisory board. 2011

Alex Antonites, winner of the 2009 Orville N. Greene Service Award, is professor emeritus in the Department of Philosophy, University of Pretoria, South Africa. His fields of speciality are Philosophy of Science, Philosophical Cosmology, Animal Consciousness and Ethics, Theory of Evolution, and Philosophical Anthropology (Meaning of Life). He is a member of the South African Academy of Science and other academic organizations and institutes. Apart from philosophy, he also have a degree in theology. Prof. Antonites regularly publishes many articles in academic journals. This includes articles on extraterrestrial intelligence. Alex regularly gives papers (some of which includes topics also on extraterrestrial intelligence) at international and national philosophy conferences, and others, such as SA AMSAT, as well as taking part in discussions on South African radio and TV. He is the regional coordinator of the SETI League for South Africa. Influenced by Carl Sagan and others, he has also developed an interest in intra-terrestrial intelligence (animals). 2009

Tom Crowley, amateur radio callsign KT4XN, was selected to receive The SETI League's 2008 Orville Greene Service Award, for exemplary volunteer service to the nonprofit organization. A Charter Member of The SETI League, Crowley has long served as a SETI League volunteer Regional Coordinator. He has served as President and Treasurer of the Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers (SARA), a SETI League affiliate society, and participated in many SARA and SETI League meetings over the years. His efforts to bring the two organizations closer together have helped to legitimize SETI science as a respected branch of radio astronomy. Further details appear in this Press Release.

2008

The Trustees of SETI League surprised its Awards Committee chairman David Ocame, WS1ETI, by rejecting his committee's recommendations, and honoring Dave with its annual service award. In addition to his Committee leadership, Ocame operates a Project Argus station in Connecticut, and is a frequent contributor to The SETI League website, various SETI League Conferences and Proceedings, and SearchLites, our quarterly newsletter. The Orville N. Greene Service Award was presented by telephone at our 2006 Annual Meeting, to Charter Member Tom Sanders, W6QJI. Tom served as one of our first volunteer Regional Coordinators, and organized our annual Ham Radio QSO Party. At the 2004 SETICon Awards Reception, awards committee chairman David Ocame (left) and executive director H. Paul Shuch present the third Orville N. Greene Service Award via teleconference to Ed Cole, AL7EB. Cole, a prominent radio amateur and microwave experimenter, has been an active contributor to SETI League technical activities for a number of years. He serves as The SETI League's volunteer Regional Coordinator for Alaska, participates actively on the organization's various technical email discussion lists, has given papers at previous SETICon Technical Symposia, has contributed articles and software to the group's website, and last year conducted the first SETICon Hardware Workshop. Prof. Allen Tough accepts the second annual Orville N. Greene Service Award at the SETICon03 Awards Banquet. A respected futurist, Tough has long been involved in the speculative side of SETI science, through his teaching, writing, and participation on SETI committees within the International Academy of Astronautics and the International Astronomical Federation. A Charter Member, he has served The SETI League in a number of volunteer roles, including Regional Coordinator, editor of Contact In Context, and founding Chairman of the organization's Strategic Planning Committee. 2003

The very first Orville N. Greene Memorial award was presented to Stephen D. Carver, Esq., K5PT (left) by SETI League founder and president Richard Factor (center). Carver, a patent attorney from Little Rock AR, serves as The SETI League's volunteer patent and trademark counsel. The award recognizes his diligence in protecting The SETI League's intellectual property interests. This award was established in the memory of The SETI League's co-founder, himself a patent attorney, and is presented annually to a person or persons making unusual volunteer contributions, or providing extraordinary service, to The SETI League, Inc. At right is Dr. Claudio Maccone, our 2002 Bruno Award recipient. See related press release.
