SETI League Affiliated Societies

It shall be the policy of The SETI League, Inc. to affiliate itself with organized, non-commercial Amateur Radio, Astronomy, and Radio Astronomy groups or societies of kindred aims and purposes with a view to forming a homogeneous organization for unity of action in matters affecting amateur participation in a global search for extraterrestrial intelligence. This policy shall embrace four categories of affiliation as follows:

Category 1: Local Amateur Radio, Astronomy, and Radioastronomy clubs.
Category 2: Regional or National organized Amateur Radio, Astronomy, and Radioastronomy groups.
Category 3: Local school or youth group Amateur Radio, Astronomy, and Radioastronomy clubs.
Category 4: SETI Research organizations, or Groups of Amateur Radio, Astronomy, and Radioastronomy clubs joined together in common purpose.
Any such society which suitably expresses its sympathy with and allegiance to the views of the Vision Statement and Mission Statement of The SETI League, Inc. in accordance with these Rules and Regulations is eligible for affiliation. Applications for affiliation shall be submitted by letter or email to the Executive Director who, in discretionary consultation with the respective Regional Coordinator and the applicant society's officials, shall determine that the society is worthy and well qualified. The applicant thereupon shall be referred to the Board of Trustees for its approval. A suitable certificate shall be issued to the society in recognition of its affiliation.
The affiliation of any society may be terminated and its charter recalled by the Board of Trustees at any time for any cause deemed prejudicial to the best interests of The SETI League, Inc.
In a Category 1 or 2 society, at least 51% of the voting membership must be members in good standing of The SETI League, Inc. In a Category 3 society, affiliation status may be granted if the sponsor, faculty advisor, president or trustee of the society is at least a SETI League Full Member in good standing, and where the society's name clearly shows that it falls within this grouping. In a Category 4 society, at least 51% of the member clubs must be actively affiliated with The SETI League, Inc. for affiliation status to be granted. Alternatively, The SETI League, Inc. may enter into reciprocal affiliation status with Category 4 societies, independent of member club affiliation status, by action of the Executive Director and subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees.
The Executive Director shall be responsible for the general supervision of the affiliated societies and their welfare, and for the relations existing with them, shall keep all records and conduct all necessary correspondence with them.
The SETI League, Inc. is a membership-supported, non-profit [501(c)(3)], educational and scientific corporation. Affiliation of any group or society with The SETI League, Inc. shall in no way be construed as conferring non-profit status upon that group or society. Affiliated societies may solicit and collect tax-exempt contributions in the name of The SETI League, Inc., only to the extent that all such funds collected are provided directly to and for the exclusive use of The SETI League, Inc.
Affiliates of The SETI League, Inc. may display a facsimile of the official Seal of The SETI League, Inc. in their publications and periodicals. Affiliates will provide The SETI League, Inc. with three (3) copies of any publication or periodical displaying said Seal. Affiliates will notify The SETI League, Inc. of any electronic reproduction or distribution which they make of said Seal.
These Rules and Regulations shall have the force and effect of Bylaws of The SETI League, Inc. They may be amended as necessary from time to time by the Board of Trustees. Amendments or revisions shall become effective as of the date of their posting to the World Wide Web site of The SETI League, Inc.
