San Marino Scale Calculator
Rev. 1.0, adopted September 2007

Instructions:

Use the boxes below to describe the active SETI transmission you wish to analyze. Select one option in each of the two boxes. The potential exposure associated with the event, estimated on an ordinal scale of one (insignificant) to ten (extraordinary), is displayed at the bottom of the page.

Select
Intensity of
Transmission:
Greater than or equal to 100,000 times the average solar flux intensity at the frequency of the transmission, over detection bandwidth consistent with the signal
Greater than or equal to 10,000 times the average solar flux intensity at the frequency of the transmission, over detection bandwidth consistent with the signal
Greater than or equal to 1,000 times the average solar flux intensity at the frequency of the transmission, over detection bandwidth consistent with the signal
Greater than or equal to 100 times the average solar flux intensity at the frequency of the transmission, over detection bandwidth consistent with the signal
Greater than or equal to 10 times the average solar flux intensity at the frequency of the transmission, over detection bandwidth consistent with the signal
Of the same order of magnitude as the average solar flux intensity at the frequency of the transmission, over detection bandwidth consistent with the signal
Select
Character of
the Transmission:
Reply to an extraterrestrial signal or message (if they are not yet aware of us)
Continuous, broadband transmission of a message to ETI
Special signal targeting a specific star or stars, at a preselected time, in order to draw the attention of ETI astronomers
Sustained, untargeted message with the intention to reach ETI
A beacon without any message content (e.g., planetary radar)

Webmaster's Disclaimer: This San Marino Scale Calculator requires a JavaScript-enabled browser. Your browser must be set to "allow active content." Some browser security settings block active content, and thus will inhibit this calculator's performance.

Although the numerical calculation presented in the "value" box above should be valid across platforms, the graphical "Exposure" display just below it may be browser-specific. It has been noted, for example, that some versions of Netscape do not print the same results that they display on the screen! In some versions of both Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer, clicking the Reload button after computing San Marino Scale values yields the correct numerical value, but the wrong graphical "exposure" display. If the two are in conflict, the numerical "value" display takes precedence. Your Webmaster regrets the lack of consistant standards in the browser industry.

If your results appear questionable, clear your browser cache and reload this page. Please report any anomalies to the webmaster via email.

The IAA SETI Permanent Committee thanks SETI League member Daniel Boyd Fox for coding the JavaScript for the San Marino Scale Calculator.
